The Olmsted Parks in Louisville Mary Anne Fox Biological Technician Olmsted Parks Conservancy

Mary Anne will discuss the conservancy's role in woodland management of the Olmsted park system in Louisville, KY. She will cover different types of natural areas they have, the native plants in the parks, and the invasive plants they manage. She will discuss some of the challenges encountered in the management of the parks.

"When Frederick Law Olmsted was commissioned to design a park system for Louisville in 1891, he was already the acknowledged father of America landscape design, famous for his work on Central Park in New York, the U.S. Capitol Grounds, and the Biltmore estate grounds. Olmsted's greatest achievement, however, was his concept of creating a system of parks connected to tree-lined parkways, instead of freestanding parks as was the common practice. His concept was most fully realized in Louisville, the ultimate park system of his career, and one of only four completed such Olmsted systems in the world." (https://www.olmstedparks.org/our-parks/) Mary Anne is a horticulturist and biological technician at Olmsted Parks Conservancy in Louisville, KY. She received a B.S. in Agriculture with a concentration in Horticulture from Western Kentucky University and interned at Bernheim Arboretum and Baker Arboretum in south central KY before moving to Philadelphia, PA, working primarily as an urban gardener and freelance landscaper.  Now, she assists in the management and design of natural areas in Louisville's Olmsted parks. Public Welcome Chapter Meeting

Native Plants and Native People the necessity of including the human element of environmental conservation Dr. Eleanor Phillips Lopez Abstract Faced with the harsh and ever more visible realities of climate change and ecological collapse, underlying systemic inequities in our human ecology also become apparent. In the face of daunting crises, there is a desire to connect with nature, to restore balance, to ensure sustainability and health for future generations. I invite us to re-frame the starting point for thinking about environmental stewardship that centers humans as an extension of the natural world. To do this, I believe it is essential to be in right relationship with Native Americans as a human aspect of the natural world that has both the longest relationship with native species, and who continue to thrive and remain at the forefront of protecting our environment despite enduring the human equivalent of ecocide - genocide. Using historical context and modern-day examples I will make a case for what collective land stewardship centered in direct support of Indigenous community, reciprocity, and reparations could look like in Tennessee. Short Bio Eleanor Lopez received her Doctor of Plant Medicine degree (DPM) from the University of Florida, where she studied plant pest diagnostics, including entomology, nematology, plant pathology, weed management, soil and plant sciences. She is currently the lead diagnostician at the University of Tennessee Extension plant pest diagnostic lab in Nashville, TN, and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology at UT Knoxville. Her other studies included a MS in Entomology and Nematology, a MS in Sustainable Food Systems, and a BA in Spanish and Environmental Studies. Sharable Flyer Available here. Preserving relationships and building diverse communities within and beyond the garden

Travis Watson Abstract: As we begin to better understand the impact of human influence on the natural systems of this planet, and the ramifications become more difficult to ignore, efforts are rapidly growing to help mitigate alarming losses of biodiversity on every level. The ecosystem services provided by certain groups of organisms such as pollinators are critical to both the global economy and human health and have received much attention. While many factors have been shown to influence the abundance, diversity, richness, or presence of an organism in a habitat, some may be more important than others for pollinator insects. One factor that has been shown to have a large influence on pollinator diversity is the diversity of plants available within a habitat. By discussing how specialized and generalized plant-pollinator relationships drive plant diversity and exploring the ways that native plants contribute to the functional diversity of your garden space, I hope to expand your concept of how the term diversity can be applied to your garden to foster a strong pollinator community dynamic. Short Bio: Travis Watson received his Bachelor of Science (B.S. Biology) and Master of Science (M.S. Biology) degrees from East Tennessee State University, where he recently completed a thesis project focused on the functional aspects of pollinator gardens important to supporting a biologically diverse pollinator insect community. He is currently the Horticulture Manager and Arborist for ETSU, and has over 20 years' experience in commercial horticulture, nursery management, and plant health care. His other credentials include ISA Certified Arborist and TN licensed commercial pesticide applicator. Tennessee Smart Yards: keeping Tennessee's land and water healthy, one yard at a time Julie Berbiglia

Our yards are the beginning of our creeks and streams. They are the first line of defense against land and water pollution. And, they are an important part of our municipality's ability to meet local, state, and federal requirements of the Clean Water Act. Tennessee Smart Yards is a free certification program that offers research-based information and clear steps to take. A Smart Yard is a stormwater sponge, a wildlife habitat, and the outdoor space that fits your needs.

Julie Berbiglia is the Education Specialist at Nashville Metro Water Services. She is a Master Gardener, Master Composter, and a host on Nashville Public Television's Volunteer Gardener program. Prior to working at Metro Water Services, Julie worked in informal education in waste and recycling, and in organic gardening. She is happiest when covered in soil, something Julie can do simply by looking at the garden from afar!

Public Welcome Chapter Meeting

Member Projects This month we will hear from different members about projects they are involved with that support the Wild Ones mission. Here are the projects in no particular order. Beneficial Insect Plantings at The Giving Garden - Rita Venable The Giving Garden is a 5-acre mostly organic mini-farm at Franklin First United Methodist Church on Mack Hatcher Pkwy in Franklin. All of the food grown there is given to needy people in the area communities. To compliment the crops grown there, we have installed a beetle bank, insectary, bee bed and a pollinator strip. Photos of each area will be shown with brief explanations on establishment of the areas. Outdoor Classroom at New Hope Academy - Rita Venable The working group for the outdoor classroom has recently decided to focus on the Sharp Branch of the Harpeth River (where there is a  pond and wetland) in the back of the school to teach children about the natural world via hands on experience. Invasive plant removal and replacement with native plants is the plan for this fall. Our progress so far will be discussed briefly. The Habitat Connection - Melinda Baker The Habitat Connection is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping small property owners regenerate habitat to advance bird conservation in Middle TN. We partner with churches, HOA's, individual homeowners, and more to implement ecological lawn and garden practices that support birds and biodiversity in general. In addition to managing our ongoing habitat regeneration projects, we offer a unique and highly personalized Bird Sanctuary Certification program for homeowners. Green Hills Park Revitalization - Ashley Cantrell Green Hills Park is a 12-acre park located next to JT Moore Middle School in the heart of Green Hills.  Like many areas around town, the park has a high concentration of invasive plants.  Volunteers are removing invasives and replacing them with a wide variety of middle Tennessee native plants.  Our ultimate goal is to turn Green Hills Park into a native plant showcase park where people can appreciate the beauty of our native plants, while building a stronger sense of community. Beyond Aesthetics: "Garden As If Life Depends On It" Margie Hunter

Wise gardening choices in residential and commercial landscapes help ensure the health and survival of local wildlife as well as ourselves.  Recent research and in-depth observations demonstrate the value of native plants as the backbone for urban and suburban green space to attract and support the diversity of life needed for a truly functional (and beautiful) landscape.  We'll explore the findings of various authors and researchers and discuss their recommendations for creating gardens that offer a sustainable lifeline for everyone " insects to humans.   Margie Hunter is a naturalist, writer and author of Gardening with the Native Plants of Tennessee: The Spirit of Place. She gives presentations on native plants and natural history, is a member of Tennessee Native Plant Society, Tennessee Invasive Plant Council, and Wild Ones, and volunteers with the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Margie is a founding board member of the Tennessee Naturalist Program, and serves as an instructor for several classes. Shareable Flyer An letter-size flyer is available here. Abstract

The Sandhill Crane and the endangered Whooping Crane can be seen roosting and migrating through Tennessee and North Alabama. In the 1940s both Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes reached drastically low population sizes. Today Sandhill Cranes are one of the most populous cranes in the world and there are over 650 wild Whooping Cranes, 80 of which visit Wisconsin each year, and while their population numbers are growing, both Whooping Cranes and Sandhill Cranes continue to face threats. Join Jessie Taylor, Whooping Crane Outreach Program Assistant for the International Crane Foundation, to learn about the cranes of Tennessee. Following this presentation, you will be able to identify Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes, know the history of both crane species, understand the current work crane conservation partners are doing to protect cranes throughout their flyways, and find out how you can be an ambassador for cranes in Tennessee and North Alabama as a volunteer or Tennessee Naturalist.
