Native Plant Propagation Course

This event has ended
Saturday, January 25th, 2020
to (Central Time)
Online/Virtual

Instructor: John Manion, Kaul Wildflower Garden Curator at Birmingham Botanical Gardens
What to Bring: Sack lunch
Cost: $80 ($70 for WOMT members)
Pre-Registration: Sign-up here

Brief Description:
John Manion, Kaul Wildflower Garden Curator at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, will teach a full day native plant propagation course. Half of the day will focus on propagating from seed and the other half will focus on vegetative propagation.

Details:
Reasons for propagating native plants range from personal enjoyment to the important work of conserving local biodiversity. Populating your own landscape with a diversity of native species is an excellent way to protect them and recreate plant communities that have been lost to development. Further, by using native plants you are improving the survival, health and vigor of countless living creatures, birds, butterflies, and humans!

John Manion, the horticulturalist at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, will instruct participants how to propagate native plants vegetatively and from seed. All who attend will leave with newly sewn seeds, as well as have the opportunity to take home additional seeds, including from some rare species.

This event is sponsored by the Wild Ones Middle Tennessee Chapter,
the Southeastern Grasslands Initiative,
and the Tennessee Plant Conservation Alliance.

A flyer containing the above information is available here.

Pollinators of Tennessee
Rita Venable
Pollinators are needed for 33% of human food crops and 90% of flowering plant reproduction. The world is currently in a pollinator crisis with significant declines in honeybees, native bees, birds, bats, butterflies, and other species. What are the threats? What can we do to help?

Rita Venable is the author of the field guide Butterflies of Tennessee (2014, Maywood Publishing).

She was an assistant biologist with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation conducting biological surveys in state parks and natural areas with the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory program.

She has spoken at nature sanctuaries, regional garden expos, landscaping seminars, scientific symposiums, and nature and garden clubs. She has been a guest on “Talk of the Town ; “Tennessee Wild Side” and “Volunteer Gardener” .

Rita is currently involved with consulting on pollinator plants for a 5-acre garden, the “Giving Garden,” in Franklin, TN.

Please share the meeting flyer with anyone who might be interested.

Grasslands and their Conservation
in Tennessee and Kentucky
Jeremy French

Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist
Quail Forever & Southeastern Grassland Initiative

Jeremy will provide an overview of the historic grasslands of Tennessee and Kentucky.  What did they used to look like?  What do they look like now?  He will explain what needs to be done for grassland preservation.

Jeremy French is a partner wildlife biologist with Quail Forever, American Bird Conservancy, NRCS, and Southeastern Grasslands Initiative working on conserving grasslands and grassland species in 30 counties in Tennessee through an RCPP farm-bill program. Jeremy has spent the majority of his life in grassland ecosystems, whether it was growing up exploring the wet prairies of the Everglades in south Florida or conducting research on bison and their effect on Herpetofuana populations in the tall grass prairies of the Great Plains or helping create shortgrass prairie habitat in Wyoming. Jeremy specializes in reptiles and amphibians but is passionate about all grassland species especially bison. In Jeremy’s free time he likes to hunt, fish, hike, trap and camp with his fiancé Callie. Jeremy is also an amateur wildlife photographer who enjoys capturing natures beauty through the lens of a camera.

Incorporating Native Plants into Your Yard
Shannon Trimboli
Native plants are growing in popularity among homeowners and gardeners. Not only are native plants adapted to our crazy weather and soils, they also provide valuable food and resources for pollinators and songbirds. This presentation is jam-packed with information about why native plants can be important additions to your garden, things to consider when purchasing and planting native plants, a few tips on growing native plants from seed, some native plants you might want to consider for your yard, and the pollinators or other wildlife that use those plants.

Shannon Trimboli is a beekeeper, wildlife biologist, author, farmer, and public speaker who lives in Barren County, Kentucky. In 2016, she started Busy Bee Nursery and Consulting which specializes in plants and habitat consulting services for honey bees, native pollinators, and wildlife conservation. Most of the plants she grows for Busy Bee Nursery and Consulting are native to Kentucky and Tennessee. Her first book, Plants Honey Bees Use in the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, was published in 2018. Shannon also writes a weekly blog about pollinators and backyard wildlife, tips for attracting pollinators and wildlife, highlights of different plants for pollinators and wildlife, and life on the farm and nursery.

See Shannon's website for additional information.  And share the flyer for the meeting with anyone you think might be interested.

The meeting will be via Zoom.

Date Change!
Out of concern for the wind and rain aftermath of Hurricane Delta expected in Middle Tennessee, we have postponed the plant sale until Saturday, October 17, 2020.
The Wild Ones Middle Tennessee Chapter is having a plant and seed sale on Saturday, October 17, from 10 AM until 1 PM. Plants will be displayed outside and participants can browse while using facial coverings when social distance cannot be maintained.

Online ordering is closed now, but you can still come to the sale and browse our plants. The standard day pass fee of $5 will be charged to non-members to attend the sale with the option of remaining at Owl's Hill after the sale for other activities. This can be paid in advance. The fee is waived for members.

Volunteers are needed to help with this event, so please sign up below.

Public Welcome Free Event Hands-On/How-To Workshop

Our Wild Ones Middle Tennessee Chapter and friends will be assisting Swan Conservation Trust with invasive plant removal on a new property adjacent to their Big Swan Headwaters Preserve near Summertown, TN.  The Chinese Privet bushes and Princess Tree saplings are in the stream corridor, producing seeds every year, which travel downstream into a seep wetland that will be restored. Our volunteer work will provide partnership and matching funds for a federal grant to help purchase the new property! So join us for a day of fun! Cynthia Rohrbach, a biologist and board member for the trust, was our chapter's guest speaker in February 2019 (see meeting flyer for additional information) and gave us all a wonderful overview of the great work that the Swan Conservation Trust has done in acquiring grants and fundraising to purchase, restore (if needed), and permanently protect forests and natural areas in the watershed. We will arrive at 10:00 AM at the Swan Creek Baptist Church (easily found with GPS).  From there, we will caravan a short distance to the property which is not so easily found via GPS. After a brief orientation on tool safety, COVID-19 safety, and how to recognize and remove invasive plants, we will have at it.  Please bring work gloves, tools you might have (like hand pruners, lopping shears, tree saws " not required), facial covering for use when distance cannot be maintained, lunch, and fluids. Please signup at the link (sorry, we've reached our limit):
