March 2021 Monthly Meeting - Doug Tallamy

This event has ended
Thursday, March 11th, 2021
to (Central Time)
Online/Virtual

Dr. Doug Tallamy, Professor of Entomology at the University of Delaware, noted entomologist, author and speaker, will be our special guest during our joint meeting with the Southern Kentucky chapter of Wild Ones. Please note the date of this presentation is March 11, 2021 (not our usual 4th Monday!).

Restoring Nature's
Relationships at Home
Dr. Doug Tallamy
University of Delaware
Specialized relationships between animals and plants are the norm in nature rather than the exception. It is specialized relationships that provide our birds with insects and berries, that disperse our bloodroot seeds, that pollinate our goldenrod, and so on. Plants that evolved in concert with local animals provide for their needs better than plants that evolved elsewhere. Tallamy will explain why this is so, why specialized food relationships determine the stability and complexity of the local food webs that support animal diversity, why our yards and gardens are essential parts of the ecosystems that sustain us, and how we can use our landscapes to connect the isolated habitat fragments around us. It is time to create landscapes that enhance local ecosystems rather than degrade them.

The Zoom meeting will open at 6:30 PM on Thursday, March 11. The presentation will begin at 7:00 PM.
Registration
Registration is required to attend this meeting. Tickets (optional $5 suggested donation) are available at Eventbrite. After registering, you will receive an email from Eventbrite that allows you to add the event to your calendar (recommended) and also has a red "View the Event" button. Initially, that red button leads to a countdown timer. When the event is ready to begin, that countdown timer will turn into a "Join Now" button and that will take you to the Zoom event.

Birds in the Garden:
Creating & Enjoying a Bird Oasis
Pam Karlson

Description
Inviting birds into gardens by creating healthy habitat is a joyful way to connect with nature and help support bird populations. Pam’s presentation features her photographs of the Chicago bird garden she created and it’s bird visitors, illustrating how it’s possible to attract over 100 bird species. Tips include landscape enhancements, practices and plant selection, with an emphasis on natives and nativars. Chicagoland’s (and Nashville’s!) importance along the migratory route, bird species diversity, habitat, diet/foraging, nesting, supplemental support and citizen science will also be discussed. Doug Tallamy’s latest book “Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard,” includes Pam’s city garden, exemplifying the power of urban lots (pp. 190-191).
Bio Sketch
Pam Karlson is a career artist and certified professional gardener/garden designer. Art, nature and gardening have been her lifelong passions. She has been rescuing migratory birds since 2004 as a volunteer with licensed wildlife rescue/rehabilitation organizations. Residing in Chicago, she co-owns Waxwing Studio, inc., with her artist husband, specializing in design, illustration, gardening/garden design, and landscape watercolor painting.

Everyone Needs Native Seeds:
Online Seed Swapping to Increase Landscape Biodiversity

Matthew Allen

Matthew had enormous success in Texas connecting thousands of people in a native seed swapping group on Facebook. That very active group has grown to more than 4,000 members. Matthew is committed to facilitating native seed exchanges to help increase biodiversity in native plant gardens.

Matthew has BS and MS degrees in geology from the University of Alabama and UT - San Antonio, respectively, with specialization in paleontology. After working in the petroleum industry for five years, Matthew decided to pursue a PhD in geology at the University of Kansas where he will be studying how changes in climate affected plant communities in North America using rocks formed 100 million years ago.

Incorporating Native Plants
into Your Landscape
Shannon Trimboli
Description: Native plants are growing in popularity among homeowners and gardeners. Not only are native plants adapted to our crazy weather and soils, they also provide valuable food and resources for pollinators and songbirds. In this class we’ll discuss why native plants can be important additions to your garden, things to consider when purchasing and planting native plants, some native plants you might want to consider for your yard, and the pollinators or other wildlife that use those plants.

Bio: Shannon is a wildlife biologist, beekeeper, author, and public speaker who lives in Barren County, Kentucky. Her goal is to help people appreciate the pollinators, wildlife, and nature around them. She is the host of Backyard Ecology, a blog and podcast focused on igniting our curiosity and natural wonder, exploring our yards and communities, and improving our local pollinator and wildlife habitat. Shannon also owns and operates Busy Bee Nursery and Consulting which specializes in plants and habitat consulting services for honey bees, native pollinators, and wildlife conservation. December Monthly Meeting The Benefits of Trees and the Root Nashville Campaign

Meg Morgan

Nashville is losing trees, but they provide so many varied and important benefits: not just in terms of environmental health and resilience, but from a public health perspective as well. The citywide Root Nashville campaign, led by the Cumberland River Compact and Metro Nashville, is an effort to restore our city's canopy. Join us for a conversation about the benefits of trees, how the Root Nashville campaign operates and how you can be involved, and how the campaign makes species and planting selections. Meg Morgan is the Root Nashville Campaign Manager at the Cumberland River Compact. Root Nashville is a public-private partnership led by the Cumberland River Compact and Metro Nashville to plant 500,000 trees by 2050. Meg manages campaign operations, community engagement, and communications. Flyer Download and share the flyer. Zoom Information Zoom link opens at 6:30 PM, program begins at 7 PM CST.
